Elvis Acosta
Meet Elvis Acosta; he was the first Hispanic to fill the position of Technical Department Head at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Corona Division. He is a Colombian American born to immigrant parents, raised by his mom. Being part of NAVSEA Warfare, especially in a high position, is hard for an introvert. He probably struggled in that sense, but he overcame his Introverted self and became the first Hispanic American to fill the position of Technical Department Head at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Corona Division. He worked three part-time jobs (sales, customer service, and teacher’s assistant) to pay for school, to take a full engineering class load, which was not easy. Still, he persevered and graduated to go to Naval Postgraduate School to get a master’s degree in Systems Engineering. He would say, You can do anything if you put your wholehearted soul into it, and never give up hope and try. He is proof that this is true, coming from a not-deathly family and not only getting two college degrees but also becoming a person that we can call a first for us Hispanics. I would not follow his pathway entirely because I have no interest in engineering, but I would like persistence and initiative to pursue my career. I don't come from a wealthy family, so college will also be hard for me, but education means so much to me, like him. I can only hope to be able to strive for what I want, just as he did.
