Wavertree Visit
My name is Tedi I’m a junior at New York Harbor school as well as a member of Vessel Operations. As of the fall semester, we’ve been doing man overboard drills, we’ve gone on some cool site visits, we’ve been practicing ins and outs. Something that has stood out to me so far during these past few months was the South Street Seaport Museum, where the cargo sail ship The Wavertree is docked at. What stood out to me about the Wavertree is that it's a historic ship and to me being on such an old ship was cool. The Wavertree was built in 1885 and is one of the last large sailing ships that was built out of wrought iron. In 1910, she sustained damage in a storm that ended her career. After renovations, the Wavertree is now docked at the South Street Seaport retired. But what was interesting to me during our visit there is the huge amount of space in the ship, it's really interesting to know how crews back then managed all the cargo that was on board. One last interesting fact about the ship is that after some time from transporting Jute she switched to transporting any cargo that had value. To me being on a historic cargo ship was a memorable experience because you get a sense of how ships back then were and how they've improved over time.
