Channel 13 Video
In New York Harbor it is always important to know what is happening around you. One way that vessel operators keep in touch with their surroundings is by using the VHF radio. VHF Channel 13 is the designated Bridge-to-Bridge channel, this means it is used by operators to call other vessels around them for brief conversations.
All conversations on any radio channel should be kept as short as possible in order to keep the channel open for others. In this video, ferry boat John F. Kennedy is making a security call alerting other vessels that they are leaving the dock and heading for Staten Island. It is important to make a security call to give other vessels an idea of where you are going so that they can adjust their own routes accordingly.
